Almost everyone in church believes prayer is important … but a lot of us secretly feel frustrated by it. We want to pray more. We want to pray more effectively. We want to pray more biblically. But quietly, in the back of our minds are the questions we’re too afraid to ask.
“Is something wrong with me if I don’t know what to say?”
“Why does prayer always feel rushed or forced?”
“Does any of this actually change anything?”
If we’re honest, prayer often feels harder in real life than it sounds in sermons. We believe in prayer, but we struggle to practice it. We know what we should do, but we don’t know how to build it into our actual lives. We live distracted lives. Our minds are crowded, our schedules are full, and our phones are always within reach. Even when we want to pray, we struggle to slow down long enough to actually be present with God. So prayer gets squeezed into the leftovers of our day - right before bed, in between tasks, or only when we’re desperate. And when prayer feels rushed, awkward, or silent, it’s easy to assume something is wrong with us. We start to think prayer is for “better Christians.” People who know the right words, who have more discipline, or who hear God more clearly.
So we keep knowing we’re supposed to pray … and quietly settle for inconsistency.
But what if the problem isn’t that you’re bad at prayer? What if the problem is that you were never meant to master prayer … but to practice it? Prayer is a practice of showing up. Of bringing your real self before a real God, learning to slow down in a world that never stops moving, and trusting that God works in ways we don’t always see or immediately feel.
This class is about moving prayer from theory to practice. Not by adding another spiritual burden to your life, but by building a simple, honest rhythm of showing up to God. We’ll explore what prayer actually is, how to pray when you don’t know what to say, what to do with unanswered prayers, and how to build a prayer rhythm that fits real life. Our goal is practice, not perfection.
Come on Tuesdays (April 14th, 21st, 28th, and May 5th) at our Brighton Campus from 6:30-8:00PM.
